On the other end, Mr. Chandler let out a sigh.

“You know what Robert is like. He’s not the kind of man who’ll accept a loss. But now he suddenly wants to buy my land at a high price… I can’t shake the feeling something’s going on.”

Knowing Nathaniel didn’t get along with his uncle, Mr. Chandler spoke without reservation.

“Mm. And then?”

“I definitely don’t want to let him have it cheap,” Mr. Chandler said, though his tone turned hesitant. “But your father came to see me again today. I didn’t know what else to do, so I could only turn him away at the door.”

His voice remained especially polite with Nathaniel.

Nathaniel understood why. His father had clashed with Mr. Chandler before—that was why the latter refused to see him.
