Romina set the bouquet aside and opened the brocade box. Inside was a complete set—simple, elegant, understated—exactly her style.
River smiled. “Want me to put it on you? I’d like to see how it looks.”
She examined the pieces for a moment before closing the box. Then she slid the bag back toward him. “River, this is too valuable. I can’t accept it. We’re not at that stage yet.”
The flowers were fine—sentimental, harmless—but expensive gifts crossed a line. If things didn’t work out, she didn’t want to feel indebted.
River studied her. “Romina, I’m pursuing you. It’s normal for a man to give gifts. This set isn’t expensive—just a little over a hundred thousand. It’s probably the least valuable piece of jewelry you own.”
He wasn’t lowballing her out of stinginess—he knew she wouldn’t accept anything extravagant. Once they were officially together, he planned to raid his mother’s jewelry collection. Rosella had already promised her treasures would be divided among her three daughters-in-law, so two sets would eventually belong to Romina anyway. She had even agreed to let him give them early.
Romina shook her head. “Hundreds of thousands is still a lot. River, there’s no need. Aside from flowers, I’m not accepting anything else. If we don’t work out… you understand.”
