Denise had only requested five days off, but she had to extend it to search for Brycen and Calliope, and now her leave was over.

She immediately answered the call and talked briefly with her manager before looking at her parents apologetically. “Mom, Dad, please stay in the hospital. My boss wants me to go back to work.”

“Okay, we will. Don’t overwork yourself,” Brycen said.

“I won’t.” Denise nodded heavily and called Magnus to leave with her.

Once outside, she asked Magnus what her parents said to him earlier.

Magnus didn’t tell the truth this time, only saying, “Mr. and Mrs. Laney are afraid that I’ll feel burdened by your family, so I made them a promise.”

A hint of sadness flashed in Denise’s eyes. “Oh, Mom and Dad really overthink things. Actually, I never planned on getting married, and I’m not afraid of being snubbed.”
