Between bites, she finally responded. “My parents fell ill. I’m an only child. As for our relatives, they’ve been avoiding us for years.”

Ever since her parents fell ill, their so-called family had scattered like rats from a sinking ship.

Magnus fell silent, piecing the story together. “Huh. I didn’t think there are actually people who have it this rough in the world.”

For a moment, he drifted into thought. If he were still his old self, tossing her a bit of cash would’ve been nothing and more than enough for her to live comfortably.

Denise heard the sympathy in his voice, but somehow, it rubbed her the wrong way.
