Chapter 6213
For Yuhiko Ito, leaving his hometown with Nanako to settle in China was a complicated decision. On one hand, he wanted to avoid the shock that would follow if word got out that his condition had improved and he had regained the use of his legs. On the other hand, he wished for his daughter to quickly find happiness with Charlie.
Nanako had abandoned Japan to join Charlie in search of true love. Therefore, her father’s words did not embarrass her; instead, they provided her with immense encouragement.
What her father said meant the world to her.
As long as she could marry Charlie, her father was willing to overlook anything regarding the family’s name. If they were to marry, the entire Ito family would essentially become a dowry for Charlie. After the marriage, not only would she take on Charlie’s surname, Wade, but any future children—regardless of gender—would also carry that surname. Consequently, the Ito name would vanish from her lineage.
However, had she not known Charlie, tradition dictated that the Ito family would likely need to recruit a son-in-law. Such an arrangement would diminish the family’s dignity; a Japanese daughter-in-law meant that any children born from the marriage would inherit her surname, and the husband would also adopt her surname.
This would allow the Ito family to continue and thrive, instead of ending with her generation.
With this in mind, Nanako felt both touched and a bit melancholic. She gently asked her father, “Odo-san, if we don’t recruit a son-in-law, the Ito family may not carry on. Can you truly accept this?”
