“Thank you.” Protector brought his palms together and bowed deeply. “I’ve learned a lot. Your explanation gave me enough time to fully recover. I’m ready to continue.”

“Excellent.” She nodded. “Magic again?”

“No.” Protector scratched his head, a little embarrassed. “I need time to fix my bad habits. If I try to follow your advice now, I’ll end up using a clumsy hybrid style and perform even worse.”

“I want to test my specialty against you.” His gaze hardened. “Close combat.”

“Fine.” Dawn stepped forward until she was well within reach of his maces. “I won’t cast any spells until you make the first move. After that, anything goes.”

“I know.” Protector lowered into a combat stance—one mace forward, the other held at his side. “No enemy will stay this close unless I force them to. Now!”
