She took a breath.

“I asked Representative Fyrwal to invite me here so I could finally meet you, Patriarch. I—”

“That’s enough.” Tezka cut her off, though he extended a hand to help her up. “Stand up, kid. I’m no one’s Patriarch—and I don’t deserve the respect you’re giving me.”

His tone softened, but only slightly.

“I’ve done too many things that can’t be undone. You shouldn’t be so quick to forgive—or forget why your clan was driven from its homeland.”
