“He mastered multiple branches of magic faster than anyone I’ve ever known,” the Black Throne continued, “and reached heights that make no sense for a masterless Awakened who hasn’t even turned twenty-one.”

A brief pause followed before the tower spoke again.

“My question is this: what if no one noticed because the object requires a specific condition to be useful? What if that condition is a mana geyser—and Verhen possesses a mage tower? That would explain many of the things about him that currently make no sense.”

“Yeah, right.” Jorl shrugged dismissively. “Too bad that idea raises far more questions than it answers.”

“In what way?” the Black Throne asked.

“First of all, where would Verhen even find a mage tower?” Jorl replied. “He came from some backwater village that had never produced a single notable mage before him. Verhen put Lutia on the map—not the other way around.”
