“And mine.” A Hippogriff stood, followed quickly by several others from different Lesser species.

None of them mentioned that the Mad Queen’s other general had survived. They were afraid the Council would demand his execution—and with it, destroy any chance their bloodlines had at evolution.

“And you kept quiet all this time?” Seryl’s glare locked onto Nethem as leaders from every Lesser bloodline turned on their own kin who had joined Fyrwal’s research. “You kept your own family in the dark for over a year? You chose the Hydras over your own flesh and blood?”

“I didn’t do it for the Hydras. I did it for myself,” Nethem replied evenly. “Anyone who claims that involving the entire clan wouldn’t have slowed us down is either naïve or lying.

“If I’d told anyone— even you, Matriarch—they would’ve insisted on joining and pushed their own priorities. The more people involved, the more we would’ve compromised the direction and leadership of the team.

“Look around. We’re already arguing. Every Lesser Race would’ve demanded we prioritize research that benefited their bloodline. We would’ve spent more time debating than actually working.
