“My bad.” Faluel raised her hands in surrender. “I forgot exes are exes for a reason. Still, you have to do something about your legacy.”

“I know.” Ajatar kept his eyes on the horizon, waiting for dawn. “Damn it, I’ve got a three-thousand-year lifespan, and I’m barely past three hundred. I always thought I had time. Time for children, an heir, decades of research ahead of me.

“Instead, I’m staring death in the face with no heir and no one who truly cares about me.”

Faluel swallowed. She was in the same position.

“Feela’s gone. So are many of our friends.” Ajatar went on, either unaware of her thoughts or unwilling to address them. “And if we don’t stop the Dead King, more will die—until even our younglings and those who haven’t reached violet have to fight.

“I don’t want this. I still have things I want to do. But I’d rather die than live long enough to watch a madman burn our world to ash. I’ll fight to the end the only way I know how.
