Chapter 361: Accident (3)
Before Sam ended the call, he was surprised to see movement near the cliff; someone approached their car with an assault rifle in hand. Instantly his body was alert to the danger they were in right now.
“Boss! It might not be a simple car accident. Someone tried to kill us, but I can’t explain it now. Please send help right away…” Sam hung up the phone. He immediately took the firearm he had prepared.
“Sam, did you manage to ask for help?” asked Rose after seeing Sam turn off his phone. Rose was confused as to why Sam was able to call someone else, even though earlier she tried to do the same, but she got no telephone signal down here. She could not contact her husband.
Sam didn’t answer Rose’s question right away. He pondered for a moment before looking at her, “Lady boss! Please listen… A guy is coming down from your right. That guy doesn’t mean to help us, but he seems to want to take care of us…” Sam’s voice was low, but Rose could see the concern in his tone.
Confused by Sam’s words, Rose immediately turned to look. How shocked she was to see a large man trying to get down toward their car with an automatic gun hanging on his back.
Rose’s heart skipped a beat.
Isn’t this a common accident? Did someone try to finish them off?
Who? Global Group?
“Now the thing is, I can’t move my legs. So you have to help me to shoot that guy if he gets close. But… make sure you kill him immediately so he won’t have a chance to use his automatic weapon.”
There was a conflict in Sam’s heart when he asked Rose to do this. His lady boss is just an ordinary woman. Not a military member or assassin who used to do this. What would happen if this incident haunted her mind? Will she be traumatized?
Sam was really at a loss to ask her to do it. However, he had no choice, as it was challenging to shoot the man from his position.
Seeing Rose’s pale face made Sam regret asking her to do this disgraceful thing. He felt very annoyed with himself for the first time in his life.
Sam cursed himself a hundred times for being stuck in his seat. He couldn’t move his chair back, let alone shift his legs!? There was only one way—forcing himself to free his legs—but he was sure he would be paralyzed for the rest of his life if he did that.
Rose was utterly speechless at Sam’s words.
Did Sam just ask her to take someone’s life?
Has Sam lost his mind!? How could an ordinary person like her do that? She was just an ordinary woman, not a mercenary. Gosh!
Even though she had super marksmanship, it never crossed her mind that one day she would kill someone else. Her goal was to learn how to use a gun only to protect herself; she would just hurt someone who tried to harm her, but she never thought of taking their life.
But now, their situation was genuinely miserable. Someone tried to eliminate them by forcing their car into a ravine. It didn’t stop there. Now, these evil people went down to make sure they were really dead.
This reality was a little too much for her heart to bear.
But, if she wanted to stay alive, the only way was to kill the person who tried to kill them.
She had no other choice, so she was forced to agree to what Sam asked.
As Rose moved slightly to take the gun from Sam at that moment, she saw a branch through the windshield pierce Oliver’s shoulder.
She was utterly shocked.
The blood drained from her face, and she could feel her body shaking at the thought of the wood branch going through her chest if Oliver didn’t protect her.
“Oliver…” Rose’s voice trembled as she called his name. She could feel her eyes blur from the tears that had gathered in the corners of her eyes. “W-Why? Why are you so stupid for doing it? You…” Her teeth gritted in anger at their current situation. Angry because of her, Oliver was seriously injured.
Now she knew why Oliver remained where he was—not moving as if he were stuck in a car seat with his head lowered down—a piece of branch pierced his shoulder. She could tell that the wood was holding their car from falling. No wonder this car is slightly tilted forward. She was grateful for the branch, but now Oliver, her best friend, should endure this unbearable pain.
Instantly she felt her heart being torn apart, thinking how painful Oliver was right now; He hadn’t said anything since they fell, but she knew this man was in pain. She could see his tightly closed eyes shaking. There were traces of tears from the corners of his eyes. His mouth, which was starting to turn blue, was tightly shut. His face became pale as if all the blood on his face had left him.
“O-Oliver…. Did you hear me? Please stay alive. Stay with us…” Rose softly said as she took the gun from Sam. “Say something, please!?”
“Silly girl! I’m fine…” Oliver opened his eyes slightly. When he saw the panic in her eyes, he forced a weak smile to comfort her. “Damn!! What’s with that look in your eyes? I’m not that weak! Go, take care of the bastards outside!!!”
Oliver closed his eyes again after using the last of his strength to speak. He could feel his eyes feel very heavy. The pain in his shoulder was unbearable. He couldn’t take the pain anymore. He just needed to sleep and free himself from this eternal pain.
“Ooo… I will!” Anger seemed to erupt from within her. She was going to kill that man who made them like this.
Whoever is behind this attack, Rose will show no mercy to them.
But the question is, who are they?
Chapter 362: Accident (4)
Countless questions appeared in her mind.
Who attacked them?
What’s the motive?
Rose has had many enemies since her rebirth. And what worried her the most was the owner of the mine in her previous life, Global Group.
This must be the Global Group doing, right?
Or…
Was this done by NONE terrorists? Because she exposed their bombing plan?
The thought of the terrorist knowing her identity made Rose’s entire body tense.
“Sam… Do you know who attacked us?” asked Rose while seeing her target again, the person was getting closer. Her hand was ready to shoot. She had been waiting for her target to appear in her line of sight.
She will kill him!
How dare they do this to her!?
“I’m not sure. But clearly, whoever did this, the goal is to eliminate us. They wanted our life…” Sam replied while sending an important message to basecamp about the development of the situation they were facing. This ambush not only wanted to harm them, but someone wanted their life.
Sam gritted his teeth in anger that he had been too careless.
He hadn’t noticed a car following them since their vehicle pulled off the freeway. He could only see them at the last moment when the massive truck in front appeared, and at the same time, the car behind appeared and thwarted his plan to avoid a collision with a big truck.
Their car was clamped by two vehicles. After a while, their car escaped the crash. But the SUV he was driving plunged into a steep ravine.
Fortunately, the car has a strong frame, so it doesn’t crumble even though the vehicle repeatedly hits a large rock on the side of a cliff. But car glass is not bulletproof glass. The glass shattered into pieces with just a slight impact, causing a large branch to enter and injure Oliver.
This was his greatest failure since joining the Silver Phoenix—he hated himself for lowering his guard when he escorted his big boss’s wife.
How could he face his big boss later?
“Damn!! Sam, we’re in big trouble!”
“What?”
“See… someone appears from your right!” Rose glanced in Sam’s direction. She was shocked to see another man appear.
Sam immediately turned to look, and surprisingly, two people with assault rifles appeared.
“Lady Boss! Don’t worry. I will take care of these two. You just need to focus on the man by your side.” Sam then pulled out another gun. Even though he couldn’t move freely, he could still shoot two people as long as they were within his shooting range.
Rose focused on her target. The distance is getting closer. Until she could confirm the man’s position, she could instantly kill that person.
“Wait! Shoot on the count of three. We must kill them simultaneously so they will not be able to shoot us.” Sam was afraid they would shoot blindly. It would be their disadvantage because this car was just an ordinary car, not a bulletproof car like the ones they used to use in the capital.
If one of the criminals shoots with his assault rifle, a bullet will hit them. He didn’t want to take any chances. If a stray bullet hit the Lady Boss, someone would definitely kill him.
“I see,” said Rose, gripping the gun tightly. “But, Sam… are you sure you can shoot both men at once?” Rose got worried. Because it’s impossible to shoot two people at once, right? Especially if they are standing at a slight distance.
“Don’t worry. Even though I’m not as talented as you, my speed is probably way above yours.” Sam smiled. He didn’t have any shooting talent, but due to years of experience, his abilities weren’t much different from a prodigy like her.
Rose slightly chuckled.
“By the way, Sam, I have a gun. Do you want to use it? Seems like it would be easier for you to handle your target….”
Sam was surprised. He thought Rose didn’t have a gun, but his Big boss had anticipated it and given his wife a pistol.
“Yes, please give me.”
Rose then reached for her bag. She immediately gave Sam the small gun—a special one Evan had given her before she departed this morning.
Despite the mixed feelings running through her mind, Rose tried to focus on her target when her ears heard Sam counting. On the count of three, she slowly released the bullet.
Three loud bangs echo through the silent mountain.
Her eyes trembled as she watched her first kill fall after she shot him in the temple.
For a moment, her hands stiffened like immovable wood.
A strange feeling rose in her heart. She had never felt it before. Her eyes were blank, but her mind was agitated. She felt her brain slightly ache as the word ’killer’ hissed in her mind.
“Boss!! Are you okay?” Sam’s voice was like a guide for her to return to her senses. She quickly locked the gun and saw Sam’s target. She could see his target was also lying with their face kissing a boulder a few meters from their car.
“I’m fine,” Rose said quietly, trying to keep her voice from sounding trembling. She still couldn’t believe that she had just killed a human just a moment ago.
But then she tried to get rid of the strange thoughts that now filled her mind. Try to think clearly, and analyze their situation.
“Sam, I’m sure there’s still one up there. What if that person shoots us blindly after hearing the gunshot we just fired?” Rose asked anxiously.
“Don’t worry. A rescue team is heading here.” Sam looked at his watch; it had been ten minutes. The members of Silver Phoenix who guard the gold mine should have arrived.
“That person will not come down. I’m sure he doesn’t have time to run away or call for help…” Sam said to reassure her.
Rose was relieved to hear Sam’s words. But somehow, she felt weak, as if her muscles betrayed her. And her eyes slowly felt heavy, and she couldn’t help but slowly close her eyes. Darkness enveloped her, and her surroundings became silent.
Chapter 363: Sad News
Surgery Room – Promise Hospital
Everyone in front of the operating room—Evan, Rose, Danny, and Randy—looked gloomy. No one spoke or even moved from their seat. Only Rose.
She was now pacing in front of the door. Now and then, they could hear her take a deep sigh. A few times, she also uttered a sentence that no one else could understand except Evan.
“Wife, let’s go back to the treatment room. You still need a lot of rest and recovery. You need to drop everything else and just get some rest….” Evan said after he heard his wife curse herself using the Swedish language. Hearing her say those dirty words made his heart feel terrible.
Rose stopped in her tracks and looked into Evan’s eyes with concern. Her heart was shaking, and her eyes were sore from crying too much.
As it was now, her mind returned to the incident a few hours ago when their car fell off a cliff, and they were nearly killed by a hitman. If that stupid Oliver hadn’t protected her, maybe she was on the operating table, not that fool Oliver. How dare he throw himself as a human shield like that?
Thinking about it made her brain go numb. She would not forgive herself if anything happened to Oliver.
How could she live if her friend died because of her?
She will never live in peace. Never.
“I’m fine. But how can I leisurely sleep when Oliver is struggling to live?” Her voice was gentle, but there was a deep sadness in her tone. “I’m scared. What if something happens to him?”
Evan took a deep breath. He walked over to Rose.
“Oliver is a strong man. He will survive….”
Evan pulled Rose into his arms and stroked her hair gently. Trying to calm her heart. He felt she was upset at this moment.
“My love, have you forgotten who handled Oliver’s surgery? Your father. As far as I know, no patient has ever died on Uncle Nick’s operating table. So you have to trust your father….”
As if someone had splashed her with cold water, Rose’s body which had been hot—like someone had just lifted a fire in her heart—instantly felt cool. She was relieved after hearing Evan’s words.
Yes! Surely her father can help Oliver. She believes in him.
An hour ago, Nicholas Spencer arrived in this town after Rose begged him to come and save her beloved childhood friend. Nicholas Spencer and Molly Wilson rushed to this city from the East City. Luckily they were in the East City, so it only took them 2 hours to reach this city by plane.
It wasn’t just Rose’s parents who came. However, Oliver’s grandmother was also contacted and was heading to this place from Nova City.
Rose asks Randy to tell Oliver’s Grandma, worried that something might happen to Oliver—in this world, Oliver only recognizes his grandmother as family. He never identified himself as part of Hester’s family. So Rose didn’t tell them.
Seeing his wife starting to calm down, Evan let go of his embrace. He tilted his head to see his wife’s face, which still looked pale, “Alright, let’s go to your treatment room, shall we!?” Evan asked again.
But, for some reason, Rose was reluctant to leave that place. She wanted to be the first to know about Oliver’s condition.
“Rose, what Evan said is true. You need rest. You’re not in good shape either.” Randy, who was already standing beside Evan, said. He was worried seeing Rose’s condition—Mentally, this girl must be devastated.
She pondered for a moment as she looked at her body; many scratches on her feet and hands. Even now, her neck is cast because of a displaced bone. At the time of the accident, she felt nothing. But X-rays found that she had multiple internal injuries.
“Alright! But, Randy… promise me, you have to tell me as soon as the surgery is over!!” Rose pleaded with Randy. After getting a light nod from him, Rose decided to return to her room. She needed to lie down after feeling pain in several parts of her body, especially her legs and hips.
When she lay on the bed, Rose couldn’t close her eyes at all. Her mind was utterly filled with negative thoughts. And it made her head hurt. She buried her head in her palms and closed her eyes to dispel any negative thoughts.
“Wife, what’s wrong? Does your head hurt?” There was panic in Evan’s voice. He sat on the side of her bed and took her cold hand. “I’ll call the doctor!”
“No! I’m fine. I’m just worried and afraid Oliver will die…”
“I told you nothing would happen to him!”
“If… What if… something happened to him?” Rose squeezed Evan’s hand tightly before continuing, “Hubby, I would never forgive myself if he couldn’t be helped. Poor Oliver… he used his body as a shield to protect me. I owe him my life. I will never be happy if he dies!” Her heart shattered when she said those words.
Not hearing her husband say anything made Rose blame herself even more. She slowly closed her eyes. But before falling asleep, Rose heard footsteps from the corridor, and the sound moved closer to her room. She opened her eyes and waited.
It must be Randy! Oliver’s operation must be over, she thought.
Her eyes stared at the slowly opening door and saw Randy standing there. The sad look on his face made Rose’s heart sink even more.
Randy’s expression carried no good news. This kind of facial expression only brought sad news.
Rose slowly got up as her hands squeezed the edge of the blanket covering half of her body. “Randy, tell the truth!!”
“Oliver…” Randy strolled towards Rose with a gloomy look on his face. His reddened eyes were enough to signal Rose what Randy would say next.
Instantly Rose’s eyes felt blurry, as tears began to roll down her cheeks. Her body was shaking. Her throat felt dry. The words on the tip of her tongue seemed to sink to the bottom of her throat. She was at a loss for words as a painful attack hit her heart.
“I’m sorry, Rose, but he didn’t make it!”
Hearing Randy’s words, her body froze as if someone had just given her a death note.
Chapter 364: Slap
Randy doesn’t know how long Rose froze in place. Without saying anything. Without moving. It was as if she had turned into a statue.
Her usually bright eyes turned chilly, like a cold lake. If her eyes didn’t blink, Randy must have thought the girl had actually turned into a statue of the ice goddess.
But a second later, Randy saw her chilly face slowly turn black as if someone had just hung a dark cloud near her head.
Still can’t digest Randy’s sentences. “He Dies!?” Rose murmurs under her breath.
Oliver died because of her—He protected her from the tree branch—how can she carry on her life with this burden?
After a while, Rose could express what was on her mind.
“Please tell me, Randy… you’re playing a prank on me, right? This isn’t real!!! I knew my dad could have saved him. My dad never lost a patient on his operating table. Never!!!” She stared intently at Randy—her eyes had lost their usual radiance.
There was still doubt in her mind. Oliver did not die, but he was kicking and alive.
“Sorry, I can help your best friend…” Rose was surprised to hear her father’s voice from behind Randy. Her eyes trembled at her father standing there with his gloomy face.
“What!! Even her godly doctor-father can’t help Oliver!? So, is this news true? Oliver died?” Rose said to herself, “No!! I can’t believe it…” She gritted her teeth and threw away the blanket.
“Dad, Evan, I want to see him… I want to see Oliver’s body!”
Evan, who was standing beside Rose, could hear her weak voice. “Hmm… let’s go,” Evan said.
With Evan’s help, Rose was finally able to stand up straight. For some reason, she felt that her legs were frail.
It took a bit of strength to drag her body to the door. She didn’t say anything, just following Evan, supporting her from the side.
A few steps from her treatment room, she saw a figure she hadn’t seen in a long time; A thin old woman with light gray short hair walked towards her.
The old woman’s face was grim, and her eyes flashed hatred directly at Rose.
Rose’s heart skipped a beat when she saw the figure getting closer to her. She wanted to hug and apologize to that old woman. Because of her, the old woman’s only grandson died.
“G-Grandma…” Before Rose could finish her words, a brutal slap landed on her cheek.
Rose looked at Oliver’s grandmother in shock as if struck by lightning; Rose’s body shivered at how evil granny’s eyes were now. It was as if this granny wanted to kill Rose with her sinister gaze.
Nicholas Spencer and Randy were surprised to see the old woman slapping Rose hard. Just before they wanted to react… Evan’s loud voices echo through the corridor.
“WHAT are you doing!!” Evan raised his hand and wanted to push that old woman but Rose quickly held his hand.
“Don’t do that! I know I deserve it…” Rose looked at Evan blankly. Evan was astonished at how sorrowful his wife was now. He could only grit his teeth in anger.
How can he let someone beat his wife? Right before his eyes?
This old woman is courting death!
Evan would have killed this person if she wasn’t a woman or Oliver’s Grandma.
Now that he couldn’t do anything, he could only stare at this old woman with his sinister gaze.
The old woman sneered, looking at Rose, “You deserve it! No, a slap isn’t enough for you, but you must die like my grandson!!!” The old woman’s loud voice made several nurses at the end of the corridor stare at them.
Evan and the others were shocked to hear this old woman cursing Rose. They wanted to do something, but seeing Rose forbid them to do it, they could only curse this old woman in their hearts.
“I know everything about my grandson’s condition… I know from the police my grandson was pierced by a tree branch because he wanted to protect you!! That poor boy is so stupid. Why… Why did he trade his life with you? Why?” The old woman said between her tears.
“Grandma, I’m sorry…” Rose started crying again. She received a hard slap and sincerely accepted Oliver’s grandmother, who blamed her—she won’t complain.
To Rose, she owed Oliver her life—she would always blame herself until then.
“You know, he’s the only family I have in this life. Why, why did he just leave me like that? Now, how can I spend my life now? How can I face her mother in heaven?” Granny couldn’t take it anymore. She fell asleep on the floor, crying loudly.
The atmosphere around the corridor was so gloomy no one made a sound. Only the old grandmother’s cries could be heard.
But a moment later, like Oliver’s grandmother, Rose also fell to the floor. She’s kneeling in front of Oliver’s grandmother—they cried together to express their sadness because their loved one had finally died.
Leave them for good.
Rose was crying out loud…
“W-Wife…” Evan shook Rose’s shoulder gently. He was shocked to see his wife crying hard while she was sleeping.
Does she have a bad dream!?
“Wife! Rose… wake up. Why are you crying?” Evan asked worriedly. What dream made her cry until tears rolled down her cheeks!?
Evan was confused. This was the first time he had seen something like this happen to her.
Rose faintly heard someone calling her name. She slowly opened her eyes and saw Evan’s blue eyes staring back at her. His worried eyes made her wake up from her sleep.
“Husband!! I want to see Oliver’s dead body. Please take me there…” Rose threw off the blanket and got out of bed, but when she saw Oliver’s grandmother and her parents in the corner of the room—the sitting area—she was shocked.
Why are they chatting happily now? Didn’t granny hate her so much? Doesn’t she blame her anymore?
Rose was confused. She looks at Evan. He is looking at her with a confused look.
Chapter 365: Sam’s Condition
“Huh! Wife, who died? Whose corpse?” Evan asked confusedly, looking at Rose’s blurry eyes.
“Who else? Oliver!” Rose was confused by her husband’s reaction.
“What! Who told you that he died? Well, wifey, Oliver is not dead. He’s fine. His surgery was completed successfully. Look, your dad’s talking over there. He’s done with his surgery…” Evan explained. A faint smile appeared as he realized why his wife was crying in her sleep. She seemed to be dreaming of an unsalvageable Oliver.
“In fact, let’s go see him in his room. Even though he’s not conscious yet, at least the doctor said he’s past his critical period…” Evan said.
Rose was utterly shocked hearing Evan’s explanation.
Oliver is not dead!
So, what was that? Was it just a dream? But why did it feel so real?
Damn!
Rose pinched her glabella, wanting to feel the pain. Still confused if this is a dream or real.
Her eyes widened when she could feel the pain. She looked at Evan hastily, “Hubby! I’m not dreaming, am I?” She took Evan’s hand.
“Hmm… you’re not.” Evan pinches her cheeks gently and smiles.
“What happened?” Suddenly Molly was walking towards them.
“Rose!? You are finally awake. Be careful not to move too much. Especially your neck….” Nicholas quickly examined his daughter. “You still haven’t recovered. You have many internal injuries.” He explained.
Rose was surprised to hear her father’s explanation. In her dream, she also used a neck brace.
Instantly her heart pounded as she realized her dream and reality were almost identical. The difference is that Oliver is still alive.
For Rose, it doesn’t matter if she gets injured as long as Oliver is alive. That’s more than enough.
After talking to her parents and Oliver’s Granny, Rose followed Evan to the recovery room.
When Rose arrived in front of the recovery room, she saw Danny standing in front of the large glass window, his eyes staring straight inside the room.
It wasn’t long before Danny noticed Rose and Evan’s presence. “Rose, you’re finally awake. How is your condition?” There was a tinge of worry in his voice.
“I’m fine, Danny. Thanks…” Rose faintly smiled as she stood beside him and looked at Oliver lying motionless in the hospital bed.
Seeing Oliver’s condition like this made Rose feel guilty.
The incident this morning—when Oliver used his body to protect her—made her head slightly spinning. Her chest felt tight. She quietly took a deep breath, trying to relieve the tightness she was feeling right now.
Her eyes were blurry as she stared at the pale, motionless Oliver. She felt her tears were ready to pour through the corners of her eyes, but she tried to hold them back. Didn’t want Evan to worry.
However, Evan, who was by her side, witnessed his wife’s fragile emotions; it broke his heart. Slowly he lifts his hand and places it on her shoulder. He pulls her gently to his side and smiles lovingly as their eyes meet.
“Wife, you need to relax and take a deep breath… Everything will be fine. Oliver will wake up soon. Your father said Oliver will probably wake up two or three hours from now.” Evan said. From the look in her eyes, he could feel his wife must be blaming herself for Oliver’s accident.
“Evan, I just feel bad. Oliver risked his life for me…” Rose quietly said as she turned her gaze to Oliver again. Seeing her best friend sleep motionless with various medical devices connected to his body broke her heart.
Danny, standing beside Rose, could feel how sad this girl was now. He couldn’t help but say, “Don’t blame yourself, Rose. I would definitely do that if I were in Oliver’s position. Not only me, Randy, and James would do the same. We’ll protect you… because we’ve treated you like our sister.” He smiles, trying to make Rose feel better.
Even though he had only known Rose for 4 years, he could tell that Rose was very sincere and kind to all of them. Especially since working at the Wilson Group, Rose doesn’t think of them as just employees but more like a family. Their relationship is not just friends or co-workers but more than that; they are one loving family.
Rose, who heard Danny’s words of wisdom, immediately felt touched. She couldn’t hold back her tears anymore. Slowly tears started to roll down her cheeks.
“Damn, Rose! Why are you crying? Please stop it. Or this big guy next to you will beat me…” Danny said as he took a few steps away from Rose.
Rose laughed between her tears, “I’m not crying because of your sweet words! But, I cry because I feel sorry for Oliver….”
Evan smiled at Danny, who was trying to make his wife laugh. Somehow he felt lucky to have friends like Danny and the others. Although he rarely got together during college, as much as possible, he was always there if they needed help. Their bond is hard to describe in words.
After a while, Rose and Evan returned to their treatment room. They didn’t see her parents and Oliver’s grandmother when they arrived.
“Are mom and dad back at the hotel yet?”
“Maybe they’re having dinner. Go lay on the bed to rest… I’ll ask someone to prepare dinner for you…” After putting his wife on the bed, Evan left the room.
As soon as Evan left the room, Rose’s mind returned to the incident this morning. Countless questions appeared in her mind. But one thing really bothered her; Who did it!?
But just as she was deep in thought, she suddenly thought of Sam.
Where is he? Is he okay!?
“Heartless woman! How could you forget him!?” Rose scolds herself.
Rose was sure Sam’s leg must have been badly injured. Still vivid in her memory, she saw Sam’s feet pinned against the dashboard until he couldn’t move from his seat.
For some reason, her heart couldn’t calm down before knowing Sam’s current condition.
Just as Rose was about to get out of bed—wanting to go to the nurse’s desk to ask about Sam’s condition—the bedroom door opened, and she saw Evan enter. Behind her was Gavin.
