Jane laughed. “Having a second child doesn’t guarantee a daughter. Most of us ended up with sons anyway.”
“Some of my sisters-in-law tried for a second child,” she continued. “Aside from Elisa—who was lucky enough to have a daughter—everyone else had boys again. Many of them gave up after that.”
The York family had been quite determined—most couples had tried for a second child. But aside from Serenity, who gave birth to Belle, their only daughter, none succeeded.
For those who had twins, the fear was even greater. The thought of having another set of twins was enough to discourage them.
Jane herself had given birth to twins—a boy and a girl. Even so, raising them had been exhausting.
