“Grandpa, Grandma, please don’t be too hard on Aunt Jessica,” Sonny said gently. “She made mistakes, and she’s already paid the price.

We can’t all stay by Dad’s side, so she’s the one who’ll be with him for the rest of his life. We may not be able to be close to her, but we shouldn’t constantly make things difficult for her. If she’s unhappy, Dad will be stuck in the middle, unable to satisfy either side.”

Sonny knew work kept him too busy to spend much time with his father, so the only thing he could really provide was financial support. His father was getting older, and having someone beside him to care for him made Sonny feel far more at ease.

He didn’t worry about his mother—Uncle Duncan was there for her, and his sister was with her too.

But his father only had him, and Sonny knew he had to take responsibility for his father’s well-being.
