Camryn teased Serenity, “When you were pregnant with Belle, don’t tell me you weren’t scared. Back when you and Zachary were trying to conceive, every time you traveled, you deliberately chose famous temples. You’d go in to pray, draw lots, and make wishes.”

“You really dare say you weren’t wishing for a daughter? And now you’re lecturing us?”

Serenity smiled, lips pressed together, saying nothing.

Lilian carried Belle into the pavilion. Serenity stood up instinctively to take her daughter, but Lilian waved her hand away.

“Serenity, let me hold her. Give me a tissue—I’ll wipe Belle’s sweat. She’s drenched from playing.”

With no choice, Serenity handed over a tissue. “It was a little chilly this morning, so I put an extra layer on her. Help her take one off later.”

Lilian sat down, carefully wiping Belle’s sweat. “She’s sweating so much right now—don’t take her clothes off yet. Let me dry her first.”
