Mrs. Legare woke from her nap, glanced at the clock, and realized it was already past midnight. She got up, stepped out of her room, and looked toward her son’s master bedroom. The door was slightly open—meaning Joaquin wasn’t home.

If he had returned, he would have closed the door. A cracked-open door meant he still wasn’t back.

Her brows knitted tightly.
“Where did he go this late? Why isn’t he home yet?”

Uneasy, she returned to her room, grabbed her phone, and called Joaquin.

The call connected, but he didn’t answer.
