When Aitana insisted on helping, Alex handed her a pair of clean gloves so she wouldn’t get her hands dirty.

The others had gone off for their afternoon naps partly so Aitana wouldn’t feel awkward sitting alone—and partly to give Alex a chance to spend time with her. It wasn’t that the family was being inhospitable; they were simply creating an opportunity for the two of them.

“How many dishes are you making for dinner? You’ve prepared so many ingredients,” Aitana asked, noticing the impressive spread.

“With so many people—and everyone having different preferences—I had to take everything into account,” Alex said. “I’m making twelve dishes total. Four of them are for the kids. The rest are for us adults.”

Aitana noticed that several of the dishes were ones she personally liked. Clearly, Alex had thought about everyone’s tastes.

“You really thought of everything,” she said.
