The butler replied, “On weekends, the Eighth Young Master usually sleeps until nearly noon—unless he’s going out with friends or entertaining important clients. He always says he’s so busy during the week that he deserves to sleep in on both weekend days.”

The old lady frowned. “What day is it today? And he’s still sleeping? I’ll go upstairs and wake him.”

She started climbing the stairs. The butler offered his arm, but she waved him off.

She could walk around the yard twice on her own—she didn’t need help.

On normal days, her grandsons helped her simply so they’d have a chance to show a little filial piety.

The butler stepped back and watched her carefully as she made her way up the stairs.
