Maverick and Milo exchanged a knowing look.

“Mom’s back,” Zachary said happily as soon as he spotted Serenity. He hurried over, carrying a tear-streaked Belle in his arms.

Serenity helped the old lady out of the car. “I just stepped out and heard Belle crying. She was so loud the whole neighborhood must’ve heard her.”

Zachary sighed helplessly. “You know how your precious daughter is. It’s late, she’s sleepy, and when she wants her mom, that’s it. In her eyes, her father’s arms become a bed of thorns.”

He adored his daughter, and usually Belle adored him too.
But every night, without fail, Daddy lost his ranking—Mommy became the only acceptable option.

Belle stopped crying the moment she saw her mother, though crystal tears still clung to her lashes. She reached out both hands, silently demanding to be held.
