“Good afternoon, Senior,” Aitana greeted, taking the initiative when she answered the call.

There was a brief pause on the other end before Joaquin spoke. “Aitana, are you up from your nap? Or are you already on your way to work?”

“Not yet,” she replied. “I’m getting ready. What’s going on?”

“Nothing much,” Joaquin said softly. “I just wanted to talk to you. To hear your voice.”

Aitana hesitated. “Senior, you don’t need to do this. I’ve made things clear—we can’t be together. This matter is between us, it has nothing to do with Alex. Please don’t go looking for him. He and I are just friends, nothing more.”

Joaquin’s tone hardened slightly. “So Alex complained to you? I didn’t do anything to him—I just had a talk with him. Aitana, he’s not right for you. He doesn’t even have a stable job. When I asked if he made a living collecting rent for his cousin-in-law, he seemed proud of it! Don’t let his looks or smooth words fool you.”
