About a dozen minutes later, Aitana parked her electric scooter in front of the coffee shop Joaquin had mentioned.

She took off her helmet, slung her bag over her shoulder, and was about to walk in when a familiar figure caught her eye — Alex.

He was also riding an electric scooter, several red plastic bags tied to the footrests. She couldn’t quite make out what was inside, but they looked like supplies for home renovation.

“Aitana!”

Alex looked pleasantly surprised to see her. He parked his scooter by the curb. The scooter was brand new and didn’t even have a license plate yet — clearly just purchased.

“Alex, you’re off work already? Out shopping?”
