“None of your sisters married doctors,” Second Aunt Pollock said matter-of-factly. “They all married men from different professions, and they’re doing perfectly fine. As long as Aitana likes him, I don’t care what he does for a living. Any profession is fine for my niece’s husband.”

She gave her husband a sharp look. “And I’ll tell you this—I’m quite optimistic about Alex. So stop helping Dr. Legare behind the scenes. Our niece doesn’t love him!”

Second Uncle Pollock sighed. “I’m not exactly helping him,” he said. “He’s just talented in certain areas. Sometimes he comes to me for advice, and I offer him a few pointers. After two years, we’ve developed a sort of teacher-student relationship.”

He leaned back and added, “But you’re right—Aitana doesn’t like him. I can’t change that. I think her last boyfriend really did a number on her. He climbed the social ladder and hurt her deeply. She’s still too afraid to start a new relationship. Honestly, as long as she finds someone she truly likes, that’s what matters. If she ends up loving Alex, then good for her. It’s better than staying single forever.”

He paused, his expression softening. He still felt sorry for his niece, worried that the scars from her past kept her from opening her heart.
