    Chapter 4641

The old lady kept her thoughts to herself: If it’s not meant to be, don’t force it. If you’re not destined to have a daughter, no amount of effort or adjustment will change that.

Back in the day, her daughters-in-law also tried various methods, but they still gave birth to sons. Even with modern technology, if fate isn’t on your side, you might have a daughter but not be able to raise her. Just like one of the York family’s ancestors—he had a daughter, but she didn’t survive. It was a heartbreaking loss. In her opinion, it was better not to have a daughter at all than to suffer that kind of pain.

Still, she said encouragingly, “Try for a second child—you still have a chance.”

Of course, she wouldn’t say anything that might discourage Elisa.

Besides, the Johnson family wasn’t as extreme as the Yorks when it came to having more sons than daughters. Maybe Elisa really would get lucky.

“Grandma,” came the voices from behind.

“Do I look like I just came back from Africa?” That’s where this story just took a turn??? The shock and distain of dark skin? What a sour taste for a reader with dark skin who dedicated her time to reading this novel. Wasn’t I a fool.

With due respect, the story is written by a Chinese author in a Chinese setting and character and, presumably, it is for Chinese readers. As readers, we need to read the story in the light of Chinese values, cultures, and ways. I don’t think the author meant no offense to other cultures nor hinting prejudice, it only educates other cultures on how Chinese do their ways.
