Chapter 1021 Can’t Bring Herself to Disturb

Nicholas’ eyes narrowed. Then, he ordered in a cold voice, “This guy might’ve been paid twice. Look closely and find out both of them when you look into this.” Edward nodded in comprehension.

On the other hand, Tessa kept on chatting with Sofia and Simon for a while after dinner before returning home. Upon coming home, she saw Nicholas and Gregory sitting side by side on the couch, holding the same laptop in their hands and tapping away at their keyboards while looking dead serious.

The sight of the identically gorgeous father and son under the light was a delight to the eye, not to mention that the scene was indescribably comforting. Unable to bring herself to disturb them, Tessa stood aside, leaning against the cupboard while gazing at them with a smile.

Perhaps because her gaze was too obvious, Nicholas soon noticed her presence. “When did you come back? Why stand there instead of coming over?” he asked. As he spoke, he put his laptop aside and stood up, walking toward her before naturally taking her by the hand.

Tessa replied with a laugh, “I came back just a moment ago, but I can’t bring myself to disrupt the scene of you and Greg together.”

Nicholas burst into a chuckle after listening to this.

Just then, Gregory heard their conversation. After putting down his laptop in delight, he jumped out of the couch. “You’re back, Mommy!” He ran up to Tessa as fast as his short legs could carry him, his pretty eyes shining like stars.

Instantly captivated by the boy’s clear eyes, Tessa bent down and pinched his plump cheek. “Did you behave yourself at home this afternoon?”

Gregory puffed out his tiny chest with pride. “Yeah, I did. I was as good as gold.” Tessa giggled in amusement.

Nicholas’ lips also curved into a faint smile before he sat down on the couch with Tessa while taking her by the hand. “Did today’s music recording go smoothly? Are you tired?”

“Well, it went pretty smoothly,” Tessa replied while pounding her sore legs with her fists. She lamented helplessly, “I felt okay before coming back, but now I’m a little tired after standing for a while just now.” Perhaps because her belly had swelled, she’d often suffered from aching legs and a sore waist lately.

Nicholas was instantly pained by the sight of this. “I’ll go run a bath for you. Just take a bath later; I’ll massage your waist when you come out.”

Without refusing him, Tessa leaned forward with a smile and kissed him on the cheek. “Aww, darling, that’s so nice of you.”

When Gregory saw this, he immediately came over in jealousy. “Mommy, I can also give you a massage that’s more comfortable than Daddy’s.”

“Is that so? Well, that’s really something, sweetheart.” Tessa cupped the boy’s face in both hands and kissed his cheek repeatedly.

Gregory smiled happily without forgetting to shoot a triumphant glance at his father. However, he didn’t realize that the latter was now secretly planning to keep him out of the bedroom.

Some time later, Tessa finished her bath and came out to see Nicholas alone in their bedroom. She couldn’t help but ask, “Where’s Greg?”

Nicholas answered with a straight face, “Timothy just called to ask whether he’d finished his homework. He’s now catching up on his homework outside, I guess.”

How could Tessa not tell that this guy had purposely arranged for Timothy to do so? “How could you be jealous of your own son?” She poked him lightly in the ribs in amusement.

Nicholas smiled before grabbing her hand. Then, he helped her to bed and said in a gentle voice, “Just lie down while I give you a massage.”

Tessa nodded before lying down in bed. Soon after that, she felt a pressure on her waist with just the right strength; it felt so comfortable that she almost fell asleep.

Just when she was drifting off to sleep, she heard Gregory’s sweet voice. “Mommy, I’ve finished my homework, and I’m here to give you a massage,” he said while hurrying to the bed before pounding her legs gently with his fists. As he did so, he asked her whether the strength was just right. Moreover, he said with a pained expression, “You must be tired, Mommy.”

When Tessa heard this, her heart melted into a puddle. All at once, she was bubbling with love for the little boy. The next morning, she got out of bed early.

Chapter 1022 Where the Money Came From

She planned to finish recording the rest of the music while she still had the feel for it at the moment.

When Nicholas noticed how weary his wife looked during breakfast, he advised somewhat worriedly, “Why don’t you do the recording at a slower pace if it’s too much for you? Otherwise, you’ll wear yourself out. I’ll be worried, too.”

When Gregory heard this, he also urged like an adult, “Mommy, you have to listen to Daddy. Please don’t wear yourself and my sister out, or Daddy and I will be worried. It pains us to see you like this.”

Seeing how pitiful the little boy looked, Tessa found herself reluctant to part with him. However, just as she was about to agree to let him go with her, she heard Nicholas’ voice refusing, “No, you can’t go with your mom. She has to get busy with her work, which is tiring in the first place. Wouldn’t it exhaust her even more if she also had to take care of you? Didn’t you urge her to rest just a while ago?”

After that, Nicholas went to his company. Shortly after he entered his office, Edward knocked on the door and came in, saying, “President Sawyer, I’ve found something while investigating the two leads.”

Edward went on reporting, “I had somebody take the stage operator’s debt repayment receipt out of the casino before approaching his wife and kids about it. They admitted that the money was brought back by him a few days ago.”

“Do they know where the money came from, then?”

“I asked his wife and kids about it, but they said they had no idea.”

Nicholas frowned at his answer. Unconvinced, he argued, “If they didn’t know where the money came from, what gave them the nerve to pay off the gambling debt with it?”

“That’s what I thought at the time, but the stage operator’s wife said her husband had asked her to pay off the debt with the money, saying that no problem would arise from it. Who would’ve known that he’d go to jail just a couple of days after they’d used the money? Now his wife and kids suspect that he got the money by unscrupulous means,” Edward explained. Then, he remembered something and continued, “Now his family are looking all over the place for someone who can bail him out. Perhaps we can keep on looking into it by starting from this.”

With a frosty expression, Nicholas ordered, “In that case, go visit the stage operator later and tell him that it’s not impossible to bail him out as long as he’s willing to tell the truth. After all, he’s not the mastermind behind the case. But if he’s still going to shield the culprit or give false testimony, he can forget about getting out of jail for the rest of his life.”

Not daring to tarry, Edward took the order with a nod before turning to leave.

Meanwhile, in the hospital, Susan was also asking, “Daddy, have you found out who set me up for this?”

“There isn’t much progress yet.” Rorian shook his head before his face darkened at the thought of something. “And besides, I just learned that because of your present injury, you’ll be taken into custody later than you’re supposed to, but you’ll be taken to the police station as soon as you’re discharged from hospital.”

She picked up the phone on her bedside table and dialed a number, saying, “Eunice, let’s talk.”

Susan sneered. “Is that so? Well, it seems that I have no choice but to talk to Tessa then.” Just as she pretended to hang up the phone, she heard the sound of Eunice clenching her teeth. “Hold on!”

“I’ll be waiting for you at the hospital. If you’re not here in half an hour, I’ll have no choice but to call Tessa instead,” Susan said before hanging up right away.

Less than half an hour later, Eunice showed up in the ward with a rather sullen expression. “Why did you ask me to come over? Shoot!” She looked at Susan while holding her head high arrogantly.

Without beating around the bush, Susan came straight to the point, asking, “It was you who caused what happened to the stage elevator, wasn’t it? Also, it was you who bribed the stage operator to frame me, no?” Despite her questions, she sounded very positive about it.

Eunice’s eyes flickered for a moment before she warned in a serious tone, “Susan, stop throwing mud at me here, or I can sue you for slander.”

Susan stared at her maliciously. “Ha! You know very well whether I’m throwing mud at you.”

Eunice was creeped out by her stare, feeling as though she were being stared at by a venomous snake. Even so, she kept on playing dumb while refusing to admit it, saying, “What do I know? Didn’t you purposely drug Tessa’s cosmetics out of jealousy and bribed the stage operator into causing the stage incident for fear that the drug wasn’t potent enough?”

“That’s f*cking bullsh*t!” Susan swore at once in a fit of rage. “It was you who plotted the stage incident, but you worried that your reputation would be ruined if you were found out by Tessa and others. As it happened, what I did was found out, so you decided to shift the blame onto me and make me a scapegoat for you. I’m telling you, there’s no way you can make me take the blame for you!”

Feeling somewhat unnerved at first, Eunice was instantly relieved as she looked at the angry woman before her. She thought the latter had merely guessed the truth without finding any evidence of it. Instantly, she smirked with disdain, saying, “You’d better have proof to back up your story. If you have no proof of it, then everything you say is just a slander against me.”

Seeing how the woman wouldn’t admit what she’d done, Susan gnashed her teeth in resentment. The next instant, she rolled her eyes as an idea sprang to her mind. “Who told you that I have no proof of it? I’ve found proof of what you did, and it’s in my father’s hands. Otherwise, what do you think gave me the courage to confront you here?” Holding her chin high, she looked at Eunice with a sneer and continued, “It doesn’t matter if you don’t admit it now. The police will arrive very soon, anyway. And besides, I know why you did it. You did it to have Nicholas to yourself, no?”

As soon as she finished her speech, Eunice’s face instantly changed color, and her expression darkened.

At the sight of this, Susan narrowed her eyes, becoming even more certain that this woman was the culprit behind the stage incident!

A brief silence reigned over the ward. A moment later, Eunice’s voice rang between clenched teeth. “What do you want?”

“What I want depends on the choice you make.” Susan smirked smugly, knowing that Eunice had admitted it at last. “I can refrain from giving you away, and I know that you dislike Tessa. As it happens, I don’t like that woman either. I think we can work together to drive her away, but on condition that…” She intentionally paused for a moment to look at Eunice.

Eunice asked with a look of displeasure, “What’s your condition?”

“You have to give me a place in Group Two when my arm is fully healed,” Susan said. She knew full well that she wouldn’t have the chance to stay in Group Six anymore after this time’s incident, so she had to find the best way out for herself.

Naturally, Eunice also thought of this, and her brows furrowed. “That’s not up to me.”

“Impossible! She said that she will bail me out!”

The stage operator finally responded, but after he finished speaking, he immediately regretted it. He had shown his hand.
